Face Your Fears

Fear is like a rollercoaster: It seems really complex with lots of heart throbbing twists and turns. But once you take the ride you realize it wasn’t that bad at all! Do you remember your first rollercoaster ride? I do. And even  though I was terrified, I DID IT ANYWAY! So how is it that we can take a chance on a ride that could literally kill us, but not take a chance on overcoming some fears that can literally SAVE US?

Yeah. Chew on that for a minute. It really is deep when you think about it. I personally feel that we are taught to be fearful by society, our peers and sometimes even by our parents. The interesting thing about fear is the POWER such an inanimate object can have over us! It is mostly based on our THOUGHTS and what we THINK would happen.

The good news is, you don’t have to stay paralyzed by your fears! There is a three step approach that can be used to help manage your fears. It is guaranteed to work if you follow it to the letter.

Step one: Get a journal so that you can write your fears down on paper. Be BRUTALLY HONEST! There is no such thing as a silly or ridiculous fear. Seeing them on paper forces you to acknowledge them. Most people are afraid of things that are so deeply rooted in their psyche, that until they write it down, it has power over them that they weren’t aware of. Getting a journal also allows you to keep track of the work or LACK OF WORK, that you have done in regards to your fears.

Step two: Identify one of your fears and dissect it. What is it about the fear that immobilizes you? Is it fear of failure, bodily harm, humiliation? Get to the core of your fear. Once you are clear on WHY you are fearful, you can identify HOW you can overcome it. What is this fear keeping you from accomplishing in your life? How would your life be different if you didn’t this fear to dominate you?

Step three: Treat your fear as the obstacle standing in the way of a million dollar payoff! How easy would it be to overcome your fear if you knew you would get a million dollars if you conquered it? While it might be tough to do, I think you would find a way to get it done. A perfect example is the show Fear Factor. People would come on and eat worms, bugs and all kinds of things that normally grossed them out!! But the payoff makes it worthwhile to TRY. And they realize that it wasn’t so bad after all.

That’s what you have to do to fear. Stand up to it! Fear is a bully and as long as you allow it to use you as a punching bag, it will! But imagine being ready the next time fear gets in your face and berates you. Take a deep breath and scream at the top of your lungs, “You are not the boss of me anymore!”
